8th GUSTAV MAHLER FESTIVAL

May 29 to June 2, 2024

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) and Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) were two profoundly different people whose lives intersected several times. One became world-famous as a conductor and opera director, the other was celebrated as a genius primarily in his homeland. Both struggled to establish themselves as composers during their lifetimes.

As a student at the conservatory, the young Gustav Mahler met the revered master, but he never took composition lessons from him. Nevertheless, we know from various sources that the two were friends. This connection became more apparent when Bruckner commissioned Mahler to create the piano version of his Third Symphony; this score, published in 1880, was the first publication to bear Mahler's name. In later years, Mahler performed Bruckner's works several times as a conductor. In a letter from 1892, Mahler writes enthusiastically to his "highly esteemed friend" about his triumphant performance of the "glorious and powerful Te Deum."

How then do we explain Mahler's description of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony as "musical fragments and utter absurdity [...] interrupted, however, by often divine 'ideas' and themes"?! He expressed similar sentiments about Bruckner's Ninth. This rejection is all the more puzzling when clear allusions to Bruckner can be heard in Mahler's own works.

In the Bruckner Year 2024, we celebrate the 200th birthday of the Upper Austrian with a festival dedicated to these personalities, their compositions, and the paradox of an ambivalent relationship, featuring concerts and presentations.
