10th GUSTAV MAHLER FESTIVAL
June 21 to 28, 2025
Mahler's Universe: The 3rd Symphony
Gustav Mahler understood his role as a composer in an extraordinary way.
For him, composing was nothing less than a profound creative act. Convinced that creative genius grants the artist a privileged perspective on existence, Mahler felt obligated to grapple with the great questions of life and death, as well as the human struggle for meaning.
"A symphony must be like the world; it must contain everything." (Gustav Mahler)
The Third Symphony, composed almost entirely in the summers of 1895 and 1886 in Steinbach am Attersee, undoubtedly fulfills this task, presenting the entirety of existence in a stepwise hierarchy of being – from the awakening of life through plants, animals, and humans to the pinnacle of the universe in the love of God. As such, the work bears witness to how Mahler viewed the physical and spiritual world and thus offers the opportunity to explore the composer's worldview and philosophy of life.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the Gustav Mahler Festival Steinbach and 130 years after the completion of Mahler's Third Symphony, the festival in 2026 will dedicate an extended festival week entirely to the composer's sound cosmos – in diverse perspectives on nature, man and music.
