JUNE 28, 2026 I STEINBACH AM ATTERSEE

For the first time, Mahler's 3rd Symphony will be performed with full choir and orchestra at the place where it was created.

In a small house in Steinbach on the shore of Lake Attersee, Mahler composed his Third Symphony, a piece of music which, according to his own understanding, encompasses nothing less than the entire universe in six movements: from the first, primeval awakening of life to the pinnacle of human existence in God's love.

GUSTAV MAHLER

SYMPHONY NO. 3

The summers of 1895 and 1896 were the time when Mahler advanced and completed work on his Third Symphony, which he had begun in 1892, in his composing cottage near the concert venue of Steinbach am Attersee. He likely referred to this place, among others, when he wrote to the singer Anna Bahr-Mildenburg about his work: "All of nature finds a voice in it and reveals such profound secrets that one might perhaps sense them in a dream!" The opportunity to experience this symphony at its place of composition with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz under the direction of chief conductor Markus Poschner is also truly magical.

TheThird Symphony "Nature Symphony" by Gustav MahlerIt is not only one of the most monumental works in music history, it also unfolds a comprehensive vision of the universe. Here, Mahler traverses the great stages of existence: from the awakening life of inanimate nature (I. Pan awakens; summer marches in.) through plants, animals (II. What the flowers in the meadow tell me. III. What the animals in the forest tell me.) and humans (IV. What man tells me.) to the realms of the spiritual (V. What the angels tell me.). The powerful musical images that permeate this work speak of the multifaceted nature of creation and the mysterious order inherent in all things.

Ultimately, Mahler unites the collected experiences of the work into a sweeping hymn to love – that force which he understood as the highest level of existence (VI. What Love Tells Me). A musical affirmation of the dignity of life and the profound interconnectedness of all things.

Mahler's Third Symphony is considered one of his most visionary creations: a sonic universe that leads from the earthly to the metaphysical and ends in one of the most moving final adagios in music history.

The Bruckner Orchestra Linz is one of Central Europe's leading orchestras, looks back on a history of more than 200 years, and has borne the name of the Genius Loci since 1967. Since the appointment of Markus Poschner as chief conductor The BOL is undergoing a widely observed opening process that generates many new formats, seeks out unexpected places, finds surprising ways in communication, and above all provides artistic events in an inimitable dramaturgy that, due to its urgency and intensity, generates unprecedented responses from the public and press in Upper Austria and around the world.

The BOL is not only the symphony orchestra of Upper Austria, but also performs the musical productions of the Linz State Theatre in the Music Theatre, one of the most modern theatre buildings in Europe, which is the BOL's home. Concerts at the International Bruckner Festival Linz, concert series at the Brucknerhaus, and spectacular programs as part of the Ars Electronica Festival are all part of the orchestra's repertoire, as is its role as an ambassador for Upper Austria and its namesake on national and international concert stages.

The Bruckner Orchestra Linz has had its own concert series at the Vienna Musikverein since 2012 and, for the first time in 2020, also at the Brucknerhaus Linz. Collaborations with leading soloists and conductors of our time underscore the significance of this Upper Austrian ensemble. The BOL was awarded "Best Orchestra of the Year" at the 2020 Music Theatre Prize.
In 2024, the BOL and Markus Poschner were awarded the prestigious »ICMA Special Achievement Award« for the complete recording of the Bruckner symphonies.
